Debbie Allen Dance Academy is a 23,326-square-foot adaptive reuse and ground-up performing arts facility located in Los Angeles, California. Completed in June 2022, the project transformed a historic site into a state-of-the-art cultural destination dedicated to dance education, performance, and community engagement.

The new two-story facility combines contemporary construction with preserved elements of the original structure, incorporating existing brick walls from a building dating to 1922. The structural steel building houses a 150-seat performing arts theater, five professional-grade dance studios, classrooms, locker rooms, gallery spaces, and administrative and support areas designed to serve students, performers, and visitors alike.

A key feature of the project is its emphasis on performance-quality environments, including enhanced acoustic design within the dance studios to support instruction and rehearsal activities. The building’s architectural identity is further defined by an illuminated translucent polycarbonate exterior skin that creates a distinctive presence within the surrounding neighborhood.

Owner-furnished, contractor-installed elements included specialized theater equipment and FF&E required to support the academy’s educational and performance programs. Recognized with the 2023 LAHQ Community Impact Award, the completed facility provides a lasting cultural resource that advances arts education and community enrichment in Los Angeles.
