A downtown adaptive reuse transforming an existing hotel into student housing, dining, study, fitness, and community spaces designed around student life.
SJSU Spartan Village on the Paseo is a 45,000-square-foot Design-Build higher education renovation and adaptive reuse project in downtown San Jose. The existing hotel was converted into a 13-story student housing community with 696 beds across 264 residential units, along with new academic, dining, recreation, and support spaces.
Upper-level hotel rooms were converted to residential dormitory housing, with select units receiving accessible restroom upgrades. The lobby was renovated to include a parcel room and support spaces, while the second floor was transformed into a student center with a fitness center, game room, study room, meeting rooms, shared residential kitchen, cafeteria and servery, flexible lecture space, administrative offices, and a commercial kitchen.
Additional work included basement storage improvements and separation of utilities previously shared with the neighboring tower. New independent utility connections, a fire water tank, and fire pump room were added to support the renovated building.
Structural concrete, metal flooring, and metal framing/drywall scopes were self-performed. The GreenPoint-certified project received the 2024 Silicon Valley Structures Award for Community Impact.
